"Large Love" star Bill Paxton is within discussions to direct "Kung Fu," Legendary Pictures' feature adaptation from the popular David Carradine series that'll be compiled by "Black Swan" scribe John McLaughlin. Such as the series, "Kung Fu" follows the adventures of the Shaolin monk who travels through America armed just with his spiritual training and fighting techinques abilities. Vincent Newman ("Paradise Lost") will produce via his Vincent Newman Entertainment banner. Legendary can also be working carefully with Erectile dysfunction Spielman, who's credited because the co-creator from the "Kung Fu" TV series, which went from March. 1972 to April 1975 on ABC. Warner Bros. is anticipated to distribute the film worldwide because of their lengthy-standing relationship with Legendary Entertainment. Production is anticipated to begin next summer time and also the pic will probably be shot partially in China. Paxton formerly directed the 2001 thriller "Frailty" and Disney's 2005 golf pic "The Finest Game Ever Performed," which starred Shia LaBeouf. However, lnlike most stars-switched-company directors, Paxton's helming career is not a consequence of his success while watching camera. Before his looks in James Cameron's "The Terminator" and "Aliens," Paxton directed the 1980 animated short "Seafood Heads," by which he performed the primary character. While he's been busy the final couple of years with HBO's "Large Love," Paxton lately directed another video clip, "Tattoo," which stars "Frailty" thesp Forces Boothe and veteran character actor James Hong. Tower Heist
'Tower Heist'A Universal Pictures release presented with Imagine Entertainment in association with Relativity Media of a Brian Grazer production. Produced by Grazer, Eddie Murphy, Kim Roth. Executive producers, Bill Carraro, Karen Kehela Sherwood. Directed by Brett Ratner. Screenplay, Ted Griffin, Jeff Nathanson; story, Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Griffin.Josh Kovaks - Ben Stiller
Slide - Eddie Murphy
Charlie - Casey Affleck
Arthur Shaw - Alan Alda
Mr. Fitzhugh - Matthew Broderick
Lester - Stephen McKinley Henderson
Mr. Simon - Judd Hirsh
Special Agent Claire Denham - Tea Leoni
Enrique Dev'Reaux - Michael Pena
Odessa - Gabourey Sidibe
Miss Iovenko - Nina AriandaFurther evidence that the working-class is sharpening its pitchforks to storm Wall Street's castle, "Tower Heist" serves up an old-fashioned comedy caper in which employees in a tony residential high-rise scheme to steal back the millions embezzled by the Bernie Madoff-style fat cat living in the building's penthouse. But the big-budget pic goes wonky on the way to the bank, due to its lackluster pacing and shortage of the qualities that typically earn stars Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy their paychecks -- namely, laughs. Still, their involvement should help protect Universal's investment, ensuring decent returns into the holidays. In a heist movie, the less time spent on setup the better. But helmer Brett Ratner, whose unapologetically broad yet super-slick entertainments have previously demonstrated a keen sense of what auds want, instead draws out the setup. Smitten with the building (Trump Tower, but never identified as such), he deliberately establishes each of the characters, from smug billionaire Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda, perfectly cast) to dutiful building manager Josh Kovaks (Stiller), who admires Shaw and takes his job incredibly seriously -- until he learns that the Tower's top-floor tenant pocketed the staff's retirement savings. The script, credited to five writers, patiently waits for disillusion to sink in, trickling down through the building and its personnel, which include a clueless expectant-father concierge (Casey Affleck), a bankrupt investor (Matthew Broderick) and a devastated old doorman (Stephen McKinley Henderson) who tries to step in front of a subway train when he learns what became of his nest egg. The film also supplies a first-day-on-the-job bellhop (Michael Pena), whose arrival allows for a remedial tour of the Tower's security operations, which sound complicated but don't really impact the heist in any way. For the first 40 minutes or so, the pic plays like a dull blue-collar drama populated entirely by stereotypes, none more outrageous than Murphy, who appears on Josh's way to and from work, wearing a do-rag and shouting at his girlfriend in the street -- a welcome return to the comic's irreverent, '80s-era persona. Sadly, Murphy, who reportedly hatched the project as an all-black answer to the "Ocean's Eleven" series, isn't in the movie much. By the time his idea reached the screen, it had been rethought to such a degree that Murphy now finds himself the only black character in the initial crew, enlisted because "he's been arrested a bunch of times." The gang later recruits a Jamaican safe-cracking maid played by "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe, who gives Murphy a chance to squirm under her sexual advances (hilarious) and fend off fat jokes (not so much). Once the wheels finally start to turn on Josh's plan to steal back the money Shaw embezzled, "Tower Heist" picks up some much-needed momentum. Ratner finds himself on firmer ground in such familiar genre territory, having previously done some of his best work on little-seen heist movie "After the Sunset," which recognized that the only thing more entertaining than actually nabbing a multimillion-dollar prize is trying to get away with it. "Tower Heist" spends the rest of its running time tracking the crew as they try to infiltrate Shaw's penthouse, locate his hidden millions and, when that fails, make off with the prized 1963 Ferrari he keeps parked in his living room. But the consequences get short shrift -- a strange choice, after having introduced Tea Leoni as a sympathetic FBI agent who agrees to go out with Josh the Saturday after the heist is planned. The resolution feels rushed, especially as concerns Stiller's character; the actor, so good at playing annoyed, might have been better used trying to thwart the heist from within, rather than leading it. A subplot in which Josh and Shaw play computer chess suggests there's a battle-of-the-wits aspect to the caper, though the most entertaining bits showcase the ensemble at their most clueless, as when Murphy tests his amateur cohorts by daring them to steal $50 worth of merchandise from the mall -- the scene that best fosters genuine identification with these buffoons. During the heist itself, the suspense is palpable, if only because Christophe Beck's funky score blares its horns so insistently, one can't help but feel anxious. But the laughs don't follow, squandering such set pieces as Broderick dangling from the bumper of a sports car suspended 50-odd stories above NY's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade without the madcap hilarity -- or gimme golden-parachute jokes -- they so richly deserve.Camera (color, widescreen), Dante Spinotti; editor, Mark Helfrich; music, Christophe Beck; production designer, Kristi Zea; art director, Nicholas Lundy; set decorator, Diane Lederman; costume designer, Sarah Edwards; sound (Datasat/SDDS/Dolby Digital), Tod Maitland; supervising sound editor, Warren Shaw; re-recording mixers, Michael Minkler, Tony Lamberti; visual effects supervisor, Mark Russell; visual effects, Method Studios, Phosphene, Big Film Design, Framestore; stunt coordinator, Jery Hewitt; assistant director, James M. 9 Milestones in the Evolution of Antonio Banderas
In this weekend’s Puss in Boots, Antonio Banderas voices the swashbuckling title cat — a peripheral Shrek character who became so popular that he earned his own $130 million DreamWorks prequel. So just how did Antonio Banderas transform himself from Madonna’s sexual prey in Truth or Dare to a sword-wielding predator in both live-action and animated formats? You can always trace a direct line through a few important roles to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success. As such, let’s look at nine pivotal performances that track the evolution of Antonio Banderas. Labyrinth of Passion (1982) After an injury curbed his dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, a teenage Banderas enrolled in drama classes in Spain and started performing onstage. It was during a theatre production that the young actor caught the eye of future auteur Pedro Almodvar, who cast the 22-year-old actor in his second film (and Banderas’s first) Laberinto de Pasiones. The Madrid-set screwball comedy features the up-and-comer as a gay terrorist who uses his enhanced sense of smell to track down a Prince with whom he had fallen in love. Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990) After three more collaborations with Almodvar — in Law of Desire, Matador and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown — Banderas joined the filmmaker again for the controversial tame! that would give Banderas his first international exposure. The actor stars as a recently-released psychiatric patient who kidnaps a porn actress (Victoria Abril) in order to make her fall in love with him. Although the film was a success with critics and viewers in Spain, its release in the United States was fraught with controversy and initially garnered an X rating for scenes involving sex, urination and the main female character masturbating with a scuba diver toy. Truth or Dare (1991) After boosting his international profile with the racy Tie Me Up!, Madonna introduced Banderas to the world, quite literally, in her documentary Truth or Dare. Via voiceover, the pop icon tells her audience, “Antonio Banderas is this Spanish actor that I’ve had a crush on for two years. He’s been in all of Pedro Almodvar’s movies. I love Pedro’s movies. I’ve seen every movie that Antonio has ever done. I have to say he is one of the few actors that I was really dying to meet.” Formal American introduction: Check!

Patty Jenkins Will Direct 'Thor 2'
Score one for the females. Following a slew of rumors, Deadline has finally confirmed that Patty Jenkins will direct 'Thor 2.' Jenkins is best known for her work on 'Monster,' the 2003 movie starring Charlize Theron, who went on to win an Oscar for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Jenkins may seem like a strange choice -- and not just because most superhero films are directed by men: 'Monster' isn't exactly superhero fodder obviously, but Marvel has done unorthodox before. After all, the first 'Thor,' which grossed almost $500 million worldwide, was directed by Kenneth Branagh -- best known for his Shakespeare work. Still, fans will most likely be very curious to know what Jenkins will do with 'Thor 2,' which hits theaters Nov., 13, 2013 (moved back from the original July 26, 2013 release). Top Court Listens to Arguments Over Whether Or Not To Restore Many Copyrighted Activly Works To Public Domain
Alex Wong/Getty Images The U . s . States Top Court today considered arguments in Golan v. Holder, probably the most important copyright cases in the united states's background and a situation which will decide whether an incredible number of creative works, including early-to-mid twentieth century foreign works of art fromH.G. Wells,Fritz Lang,Frederico Fellini, andIgor Stravinsky, is going to be copyrighted or perhaps in the general public domain. The problem presented within the situation is whether or not the U.S. government wrongfully required many foreign calculates from the public domain and violated the free speech privileges from the American public by joining an worldwide treaty. The named complaintant within the situation isan orchestral conductor namedLawrence Golan, whowished to produce a derivative work according to arrangements byDmitri Shostakovich, but found themself at a complete loss following the U.S. brought a brand new worldwide treaty signed inUruguay in 1994 thatharmonized many intellectual property laws and regulations around the world. The moves established copyright protection within the U.S. for many foreign authors who either never loved it or whose initial copyright term had passed without renewal, which upset manyeducators, entertainers, marketers, film archivists, plus some film marketers, who became a member of with Golan in eliminating removing important works in the public domain. In the hearing today, Anthony Falzone from the Stanford Center for Internet and Societyrepresented the petitioners and contended that Section 514 from the Uruguay Round Contracts Act (URAA) violated the U.S. Metabolic rate, specially the Copyright Clause ("to advertise the Progress of Science and helpful Arts...") and also the First Amendment. "The progress of science corresponds roughly towards the creation and spread of understanding and learning," stated Falzone today. "A statute that does nothing, like that one, does only take old calculates from the public domain with no impact or prospective incentives, cannot stimulate the roll-out of anything...All it may do is restrict multiplication of things." Advocates for sleep issues reason that Congress was perfectly within its to ratify the treaty, and several your customers including large Hollywood companies and trade associations think that the URAA went a lengthy method to improving copyright protection all over the world. In the hearing today, representing along side it from the participants, U.S. Solicitor GeneralDonald Verillitold the justices, "A policy-making branches in our government made the decision we must be, and is at the nation's interest, to participate the worldwide copyright system." Verilli contended the treaty was basically meant to "rectify an issueInch for foreign authors -- not establish perpetual copyright terms or make new protection on terms which had run its course. But Verilli experienced deep skepticism from the 3 justices who asked whetherextending copyright protection backwards offered real incentives for artists to produce. Speaking about foreign authors who arrived at the U . s . States to promote works already produced, Justice Scalia mused, "It can make more income for that guy who authored it, but doesn't incentivize anybody." Justice Roberts also accepted he found the individual's arguments to become appealing with an "intuitive level." "Eventually I'm able to perform Shostakovich," he stated. "Congress does something, the following day I'm able to't. Doesn't that present a significant First Amendment problem?" Verilli clarified it wasn't so simple, which Congress had made changes towards the copyright system before that could have interfered with speech once freely loved. For his part,Falzone also was peppered with tough questions, particularly from Justice Ginsburg, who appeared to simply accept the point of view the treaty was designed to rectify an issue. The justice wondered if the copyright term ever really started for foreign authors and asked why they shouldn't get the same protections that American authors get. Justice Ginsburg requested: "We're speaking about Shostakovich, Stravinski, and I only say: Well, what's wrong with providing them with the same time frame that Aaron Copland got?" Throughout the hearing, Falzone cautioned when the Top Court upholds the treaty, it might potentially open the doorway to more actions from Congress. All Congress will have to caused by move Alexis p Tocquieville's 1800s books from the public domain, he contended for example, is always to extend existing copyright terms a century and put it on retroactively. Falzone cautioned about theconsequences of these a celebration. "Then who knows should you've arrived at the limit or otherwise,Inch he told the justices. More analysis not far off...
